Tipping
I have needed to say this for a long time. (Especially to you Christians out there ) . Some of you, most of you, know that I have been a waiter for the last two years. I have learned a great many things...but one thing I have learned above all else is to pray before each shift that I DON'T have to wait on a big group of Christians. Christians, or maybe its just those of you who bow your heads before you eat, are the worst tippers ever. Sadly, everybody knows it. Church groups come in to my work...and you can almost see the tears start. At my work when big tables come in...you can automatically add your tip % or take your chances....you take your chances on Christians and your getting burned buckaroo. I think this is absolutely absurd.
Here is the truth. If you tip 15%....your cheap. If you tip 17% your still far from generous. For Christians worldwide to tip 20% is one of my new goals in life. Servers don't care about your tracks if your gonna be cheap. In fact, I would say don't dare talk about our gracious, generous gospel...and dare leave less than 25%. Leave a server a 20....he'll remember you forever. Leave Him less than 15% ...he'll remember you forever too....and the God you represent.

Dear Cwhips,
To start thanks for giving me your thoughts, and I genuinely appreciate your realness and honesty. So I will do you the same courtesy. I could be wrong...but my inital thought is that you have never been a server before...am I right?
"I honestly can’t believe what I’m reading. This was so self-centered; two paragraphs begging for more money.(and you went on to say)...so I hope it doesn’t come across too harsh or as a personal attack."
My friend you missed my heart all along this blog. To be honest your opening comments seemed to be made to shame me in what i wrote, because you felt uncomfortable with what was written. Maybe its my own fault that this idea of "Christians should be the best tippers" wasn't verbalized better for you and everyone.
"Are you serious? We need to pay people now if we want to tell them about the grace of God?"
Again, I'm afraid you missed the heart of what I was saying. Leaving a server a good tip is a way of saying "I appreciate you, and the service you gave me."
Now, let me tell you the cold hard truth. Just like in life, you can give people good advice all you want, but if you don't love people...they are not gonna listen to you. Its the same in the restaurant world. Tipping well, is is just one of the many ways love and appreciation are shown...also a very practical way to show kindness, generosity, and love...even Christlike love.
Soooo, if your the kind of Christian that talks to your server, or dares to be as bold to ask them if you can pray for them or talk about Christ, be sure to end the night with a tip that in no way implies...we didn't like you, didn't appreciate the service, etc...because that would defeat the purpose in telling them about Jesus, you want the server to remember your kindness and the Jesus you talked about....not the Jesus you talked about and your lack of kindness. Shouldn't kindness and Jesus go together?
"I hope this entry was just written out of reaction and frustration and not after thinking and contemplating what our place is as a Christian in our workplace."
Again, I'm afraid it only took me a couple months to realize this...so I guess it means i've been thinking about this and contemplating it for two years. I'm afraid your asking the wrong question...the real question is what is a Christian supposed to be like? I hope you know already what your supposed to be like in the workplace, and I was dead serious that entire time for the record.
Ask any server anywhere who's typically the worst tippers...buddy were in the top 3 of anyones list. Since I am in the restaurant business, maybe I just see more cause for concern. So the answer to both your comments was yes. Yes this was a stress relief, as writing always is for me. Yes also my reaction is biblical. All i read about is this gracious God we serve, and how we should be more like His Son, How we should treat others how we like to be treated. I wonder if Jesus would talk about himself and leave a bad tip...I doubt it. I very simply wanted to just get the word out on whats bad....and once again...10 or less....is real bad...you shouldn't go out to eat bad. 15% is okay at lunch...not dinner...ok if your over 60 though. 17%-20% most would call you a good tipper. over 25-30% people will talk about you when you come in...and say "i need that table...or i like those people..but not if your rude obviously.
